Genesis 3:1-7
The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild
animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say
you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”
“Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in
the garden,” the woman replied. “It’s only the fruit from the tree in the
middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not
eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’”
“You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the
woman. “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you
will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”
The woman was convinced. She saw that the
tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom
it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave
some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. At that moment their
eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they
sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.
John 10:1 “I tell you the truth, anyone who
sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must
surely be a thief and a robber!”
James 1:5-8 If you need wisdom,
ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for
asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not
waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea
that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive
anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and
they are unstable in everything they do.
Job 28:23-24, 28 God alone understands
the way to wisdom; he knows where it can be found, for he looks throughout the
whole earth and sees everything under the heavens. … And this is what he says
to all humanity: ‘The fear of the Lord is true wisdom; to forsake evil is real
understanding.’
Psalm 111:10 Fear of the Lord is
the foundation of true wisdom. All who obey his commandments will grow in
wisdom. Praise him forever!
James 3:17-18 But the wisdom from
above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and
willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It
shows no favoritism and is always sincere. And those who are peacemakers will
plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.
2 Timothy 3:15 You have been taught
the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to
receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus.
1 Corinthians 1:18-31
The message of the cross is foolish to those
who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very
power of God. As the Scriptures say, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and
discard the intelligence of the intelligent.”
So where does this leave the philosophers,
the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of
this world look foolish. Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would
never know him through human wisdom, he has used our foolish preaching to save
those who believe. It is foolish to the Jews, who ask for signs from heaven.
And it is foolish to the Greeks, who seek human wisdom. So when we preach that
Christ was crucified, the Jews are offended and the Gentiles say it’s all nonsense.
But to those called by God to salvation, both
Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. This
foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans, and God’s weakness
is stronger than the greatest of human strength.
Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few
of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called
you. Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame
those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame
those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, things counted
as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers
important. As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.
God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our
benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he
made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin. Therefore, as the Scriptures
say, “If you want to boast, boast only about the Lord.”
