Setting the Scene: Facing the Cross -
Just Another Day
"Who is this Man?"
·
Luke 9:7-9 When
Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, heard about everything Jesus was doing, he
was puzzled. Some were saying that John the Baptist had been raised from the
dead. Others thought Jesus was Elijah or one of the other prophets risen from
the dead. “I beheaded John,” Herod said,
“so who is this man about whom I hear such stories?” And he kept trying to see
him.
·
Luke 8:22-25 One day
Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” So
they got into a boat and started out. As
they sailed across, Jesus settled down for a nap. But soon a fierce storm came
down on the lake. The boat was filling with water, and they were in real
danger. The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Master, Master, we’re
going to drown!” When Jesus woke up, he
rebuked the wind and the raging waves. Suddenly the storm stopped and all was
calm. Then he asked them, “Where is your
faith?” The disciples were terrified and amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked
each other. “When he gives a command, even the wind and waves obey him!”
·
Luke 7:47-50 “I tell
you, her sins—and they are many—have been forgiven, so she has shown me much
love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.” Then Jesus
said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.”
The men at the table said among themselves, “Who is this man, that he
goes around forgiving sins?” And Jesus
said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
·
John 12:23-36 Jesus
replied, “Now the time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his glory. I
tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies,
it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful
harvest of new lives. Those who love their life in this world will lose it.
Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for anyone who
wants to serve me must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And
the Father will honor anyone who serves me.
“Now my
soul is deeply troubled. Should I pray, ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But
this is the very reason I came! Father, bring glory to your name.”
Then a
voice spoke from heaven, saying, “I have already brought glory to my name, and
I will do so again.” When the crowd heard the voice, some thought it was
thunder, while others declared an angel had spoken to him.
Then
Jesus told them, “The voice was for your benefit, not mine. The time for
judging this world has come, when Satan, the ruler of this world, will be cast
out. And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.”
He said this to indicate how he was going to die.
The crowd
responded, “We understood from Scripture that the Messiah would live forever.
How can you say the Son of Man will die? Just who is this Son of Man, anyway?”
Jesus
replied, “My light will shine for you just a little longer. Walk in the light
while you can, so the darkness will not overtake you. Those who walk in the
darkness cannot see where they are going. Put your trust in the light while
there is still time; then you will become children of the light.”
Returning to the Scene: Facing the
Cross
·
Luke 23:34 Jesus
said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.”
·
Mark 15:33-39 At noon,
darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. Then at three o’clock Jesus called out with a
loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why
have you abandoned me?”
Some of
the bystanders misunderstood and thought he was calling for the prophet
Elijah. One of them ran and filled a
sponge with sour wine, holding it up to him on a reed stick so he could drink.
“Wait!” he said. “Let’s see whether Elijah comes to take him down!”
Then
Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain in the sanctuary of the
Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
When the
Roman officer who stood facing him saw how he had died, he exclaimed, “This man
truly was the Son of God!”
Facing the Cross - The Question We All
Must Answer: "Who is this Man?"
·
For some, the story ends here. However, this is where the story truly
begins!
"Why are you looking among the
dead for someone who is alive?"
·
Luke 24:1-7 But very
early on Sunday morning the women went to the tomb, taking the spices they had
prepared. They found that the stone had
been rolled away from the entrance. So
they went in, but they didn’t find the body of the Lord Jesus. As they stood there puzzled, two men suddenly
appeared to them, clothed in dazzling robes. The women were terrified and bowed
with their faces to the ground. Then the men asked, “Why are you looking among the
dead for someone who is alive? He isn’t
here! He is risen from the dead! Remember what he told you back in Galilee,
that the Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men and be
crucified, and that he would rise again on the third day.”
·
Luke 24:1-7 One of
the twelve disciples, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), was not with the others when
Jesus came. They told him, “We have seen the Lord!”
But he
replied, “I won’t believe it unless I see the nail wounds in his hands, put my
fingers into them, and place my hand into the wound in his side.”
Eight
days later the disciples were together again, and this time Thomas was with
them. The doors were locked; but suddenly, as before, Jesus was standing among
them. “Peace be with you,” he said. Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger
here, and look at my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my side. Don’t be
faithless any longer. Believe!”
“My Lord
and my God!” Thomas exclaimed.
Then
Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who
believe without seeing me.”
APPLICATION:
·
1 Corinthians 15:20-21 So
you see, just as death came into the world through a man, now the resurrection
from the dead has begun through another man.
Just as everyone dies because we all belong to Adam, everyone who
belongs to Christ will be given new life.
·
Romans 3:23 For
everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
·
1 John
1:8 If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the
truth.
·
Romans 6:23 For
the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through
Christ Jesus our Lord.
·
Colossians 2:13-15 You were
dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away.
Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. He canceled
the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the
cross. In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed
them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.
